Played Sterling Today

Played

at Sterling from the blue tees today. I got there an hour and a half early so I could get some breakfast, hit a small bucket and do some chipping and putting to warm up. It turned out as soon as I walked in they had an opening so I grabbed a tuna sandwich togo and went straight to the number one tee box, took a couple practice swings and immediatly proceeded to thin a drive right down the middle. It took about 3 holes for me to get in the groove. My theory is if it takes you 12 practice shots to warm up; then you can forget scoring well on the first 5 holes so I always try to hit a few on the range before I play to get those bad warm up shots out of my system.

Overall, my long game was pretty good, I was hitting the ball solid, only pulled a couple shots, and only hit it Rosie O'Donnell like twice. I didn?t hit very many greens in regulation because I was aiming at the flags. The greens at this course are huge but kind of cloverleaf shaped with the pins tucked in one of the corners, in effect making for very small greens with lots of sucker pins.

Even though I short sided myself into some impossible positions most of the day, it didn?t really matter because my short game still needs so much work (I realize it is going to take me at least 3 to get up and down no matter where I am off the green. I only made one putt (a 4 footer) that wasn?t a tap in, and never got up and down (although came close a few times).

This week, I am going to start practicing the short game.

Notes: Hit a huge drive right down the middle. Then hit an 8 iron right over the flag and over the green until it plugged into the back lip of the back bunker. One of the guys we were playing with suggested I take an unplayable, but I played it - chopped straight down on it with my wedge and advanced it about to the bottom (flat part) of the trap. Then hit a sweet bunker shot to about 4 feet and missed the putt.

Notes: Pulled my drive into some clumpy grass that is like 12 inches long near the out of bounds markers. The ball was well below my feet and for some reason I thought I could punch it out with a 3 wood rather than like a sandwedge. I got it out but only about 30 feet. Next time - the thicker the rough, the shorter the club.

Fairway Shot: 5 Iron - Thin
Approach Shot: Pitching Wedge

Notes: Great Drive, then badly misshit a 5 iron - I think I was getting tired and started the swing from the top with all upper body spin out amateur style swing. Then hit a fantastic pitching wedge 100 yards into the wind to about 4 feet. The ball balloned way up but stayed right on line with the flag the whole way - fun to watch.

Notes: Good drive, good five iron (should have hit 4 iron), nice chip but it really bit when it hit the green (almost like it landed in a ball mark) and left me a 6 footer - it wasn't meant to be.
