Westlake Golf Course

I wanted to try out walking and carrying my new stand bag on a short, flat golf course to see how I liked walking. Also, after my mediocre play yesterday, I felt like I needed to play an easy course just as an ego boost. Westlake fit the bill.

It was very crowded and I could only get out by starting on the back nine first. I joined a twosome of high handicappers who were overly intense about who had the honors, rule technicalities, and putting everything out - even if it was one inch. I normally putt out but if it is within a foot I will just scoop it up. Turned out they were playing for $800 and it went all the way down to the the last hole - exciting stuff! The one guy told me what happened to him on the ninth (just before I joined them on the 10th).

Number nine is a short par 3 all carry over water. It is always in between clubs - a full nine iron goes over the back of the green and anything less than a perfect pitching wedge ends up in the drink. Anyway, the one guy says "Bet you a hundred dollars you don't par this hole" He agrees and hits it stiff to about 3 feet and sinks the putt for birdie. The guy then says "told you so - now pay up!" While over his putt he knew it was a set up but getting a birdie was more important than a hundred bucks to this guy!

Out of the Rough: 5 Iron - Bad Lie

Notes: My 5 iron tee shot ended up in a clump of grass at the base of a tree. I put a smooth pitching wedge swing on it but the club twisted on me and the ball hit a tree trunk and bounced back at me and stopped almost at my feet. With the now good lie - I hit a sandwedge stiff and drained the putt for par!

Notes: Nice drive, nice 3 wood but they have a tree in the general landing area and I had to punch a 4 iron under it. Almost made the green, hit a nice chip but couldn't convert.
