CBS Masters Theme Song

Everybody is looking forward to the Masters. Here is a little something to hold you over - an MP3 of the music they play during the tournament broadcast:
Masters Music
Just listening to that makes you look forward to this week.
Some of you may not know but that song CBS uses during the telecast is actually just the instrumental version of a song written by Dave Loggins that was inspired by his trip to Augusta in 1980.
Here are the lyrics:
"Augusta" by Dave Loggins
Well, it's springtime in the valley on Magnolia Lane
It's the Augusta National and the master of the game
Who'll wear that green coat on Sunday afternoon?
Who'll walk the 18th fairway singing this tune?
Augusta, your dogwoods and pines
They play on my mind like a song
Augusta, it's you that I love
And it's you that I'll miss when I'm gone.
It's Watson, Byron Nelson, Demaret, Player and Snead
It's Amen Corner and it's Hogan's perfect swing
It's Sarazen's double eagle at the 15 in '35
And the spirit of Clifford Roberts that keeps it alive
Augusta, your dogwoods and pines
They play on my mind like a song
Augusta, it's you that I love
And it's you that I miss when I'm gone.
It's the legions of Arnie's Army and the Golden Bear's throngs
And the wooden-shafted legend of Bobby Jones.
You know who Dave Loggins is; he wrote that song "Please Come to Boston.."
"Augusta" was re-released five or ten years ago by Don Cherry... I haven't heard it but it is song #25 on this album The Don Cherry Collection
UPDATE:
Full instrumental version can be found HERE and the version with the vocals HERE Thank you Roger for making it and posting the link!!

| Insta Marv: | (05.04.2006, 00:16) |
| Ahhhhhhhhhhh.......thanks for that! I did mention that I've scheduled my vacation time around this event for about the last 5 years? Really, what better way to start a vacation than by watching Tiger tie Hagen on the all-time professional Major victories list?

- Yes, it's a sickness. |

| Okay-- Who posted this?? I have that 37 second clip, but how can we get a copy of the record in the picture??? I've been looking everywhere onine for years... |

| I would kill for a copy of the FULL instrumental version. Yes, I would actually take a human life. Like the last poster, I have been searching unsuccessfully for years. |
| Please let us know wher we could find the theme song for sale. |

| Kenny Loggins: | (10.04.2006, 17:48) |
| I will sacrifice my first born to anyone who gets me a copy of "Augusta". |
| Dave Loggins: | (10.04.2006, 17:49) |
| Hey Guys,
-
- The only copy of this vinyl was one that I gave to Jim Nantz after the '87 Masters when Larry Mize won. I really felt that moment on 11 was one that really described "Augusta." Thanks for all of your support, and Craig, please dont hurt Jim. Thanks |
| Kenny Loggins: | (10.04.2006, 17:51) |
| Hey Dave, its Kenny...I'll tradeyou an original signed copy of "Footloose" for "Augusta" and "Please Come to Boston". |
| Jim Nantz: | (10.04.2006, 17:55) |
| Hello again friends,
-
- I was just thinking about how much Ioved "Augusta" ( the original) after the Butler Cabin ceremony with Hootie yesterday and wanted to let you all know of a "listening party" I'm going to have at my house this upcoming Friday night. Me, Hootie, and Verne Lundquist will be there. Email me at jnantz@cbs.com for directions to my house. |
| Linkslady: | (10.04.2006, 20:16) |
| Seriously - is there ANYWHERE we can purchase the instrumental version? It is absolutely the BEST music ever - talk about a stress reliever - the song brings the golf course scenery instantly to mind - what an escape!! |
| Charles Coody: | (11.04.2006, 12:01) |
| The wooden shafted legend of Bobby Jones? Sounds like a bunch of rubbish to me! If you want to talk about something significant, how about my 14 stroke turn-around after my 89 on Thursday? I'll be at Jim's house Sunday, I hope Linkslady and Duck will join us. The dinner being served is cauliflower and corned beef hash, the same meal I had served at the Champions Dinner when I won the 1990 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf (with Dale Douglass). Now THAT is a real Champions Dinner. Past champions include: John Levi, Allen Doyle, Dick Mast, Doug Tewell...the list goes on. See everyone Sunday! |
| Cliff Roberts: | (11.04.2006, 16:19) |
| I'll tell you guys one thing, my spirit is what keeps this whole thing alive. |
| J. Ozaki: | (11.04.2006, 16:32) |
| I met Dave Loggins some years ago at a singles mixer and he told me the lyric: "It's the legions of Arnie's Army and the Golden Bear's throngs" was originally: "It's the legions of Arnie's Army and the Golden Bear's thong". |
| Martha Burke: | (11.04.2006, 17:16) |
| I am boycotting the Masters and "Augusta" by Dave Loggins until Hootie and Jim Nantz both come out of the closet about their illicit sexual relationship |
| Jon Lovitz: | (11.04.2006, 17:18) |
| "Yeah, that's the ticket" |
| Joe Lacava: | (11.04.2006, 17:49) |
| Fred and I listen to "Augusta" as part of his mental prep for the Masters each year. Yeah I burned a copy of it from Limewire last year. Freddy's Escalade has an mp3 player that works just like a regular CD player so he keeps it the CD holder on the drivers side sun visor. |
| I need Directions on how to get to Jim's |
| Peter "Blackbird" Jenkins: | (12.04.2006, 13:00) |
| I think I was at the singles mixer previously mentioned by J. Ozaki because I remember overhearing Dave Loggins mention the lyrics change. Apparently Hootie was uncomfortable with a risque reference to Jack's thong being followed immediately by Bobby's wooden shaft. Also, I met my wife that night. |
| Jim "Bones" Mckay: | (12.04.2006, 13:08) |
| That story by Joe is true. I roomed with him this past week at The Masters and he kept me up all night with some 58 minute loop of "Augusta". He said he got it during the rain delay. He mentioned something about Dave Loggins changing the words to include Freddy, but I didnt believe him. Joe tends to lie a lot. |
| Don Cherry: | (12.04.2006, 13:14) |
| I was told by a source close to Dave Loggins that Hootie Johnson sang the melody on the original "Augusta" track and his accent was so sick that Dave received complaints from fans who thought Hootie made a racially insensitive remark about Seve Ballesteros. I asked Hootie to sing on my re-release of "Augusta" several years ago, but after some deliberation he refused, citing "personal issues". |
| V. Lundquist: | (13.04.2006, 13:00) |
| Great discussion here by the patrons. As an anecdote, Dave invited me and some others in the golifing community to his home on Arbor Day 1983 for his first live performance of "Augusta"--both with the lyrics and instrumental. I vividly remember J. Nantz openly weeping. Anyway, at the meal later that evening Dave Loggins offered me a second serving of cole slaw. My response, for the first of many times: "Yes Sir!". |
| John Tesh: | (13.04.2006, 13:57) |
| The origin of "Augusta" can be credited to a young musicians conference Dave and I attended in the spring of 1980, shortly before the debut of the great tune at the '81 Masters. We were both pursuing "sporting music careers" and instantly became inseparable during our time there. It was during the late afternoon of our last day at the retreat that we were both overcome with the beauty of our surroundings, and while Dave penned Augusta, the lyrics to "April Song" flooded my being (now known to most as the theme to "NBA on NBC.") These, in my opionion, will always be the two greatest sporting theme songs of all time. |
| L. Vandross: | (13.04.2006, 15:56) |
| While we all certainly appreciate the musical genius of John Tesh, I must disagree with his previous statement. Undoubtedly my Final Four hit "One Shining Moment"--written at an earlier young musicians conference, likely before Mr. Tesh ever learned how to play the chimes or mouth organ--is one of the two greatest sporting theme songs of all time. Bill Packer once told me he lost his virginity while listening to "One Shining Moment" at the Seattle-Tacoma Marriott prior to the 1989 national semifinal game between Illinois and Michigan.
-
- "The ball is tipped
- and there you are
- you're running for your life
- you're a shooting star" |
| Pete Jenkins: | (18.04.2006, 13:43) |
| Hey guys, "Blackbird" again. I took the picture of the original "Augusta" record at the top of this page and examined it in photoshop. After several magnifications and extensive translation using the rosetta stone, it turns out the sleeve has the lyrics as well as a brief message from Dave to J. Tesh: "I'll never forget our moonlit walks and the champagne in your cottage. Your large, frumpy fingers were like vice grips around my cold body. I hope my testicles heal for Live at Red Rocks. Forever Yours, Dave". Unfortunately I had to delete several expletives and an unsavory reference to Charles Coody's "4-iron".
-
- "Blackbird singing in the dead of night
- Take these broken wings and learn to fly
- All your life
- You were only waiting for this moment to arise." |
| Arnie: | (19.04.2006, 18:18) |
| Why is the instrumental so hard to find? |
| "Blackbird": | (21.04.2006, 15:52) |
| Arnie - I don't know, ask Duck, he has it looped |
| I cannot find the instrumental a real one and i tried emailing Jim Nantz and it said failed deliveries after i tried it so many times does anyone know where i can get the intrusmental version |

| For those of you who have been looking for "Augusta" for years, this may be a helpful hint or the straw that breaks the camel's proverbial back. "Augusta", which has never been released in the US, except as a promo 45, was commercially released around 1995 as a CD-single ONLY in JAPAN. When I first heard this, my reaction was "why the f*ck would a Dave Loggins sond be released only in Japan?". But at that point, I only knew the song title and had no idea of the CONTENT. Once I found out that it was about GOLF...THEN i got it, because the Japanese sre nuts about golf. I don't personally have the CD-single, despite trying to find it for over 10 years. I do, however, have 2 copies of the 45, so I've got an extra if someone's interested in buying it. Best offer takes it. ALSO, I have an MP3 version that a friend downloaded for me from somewhere off the net...I would be glad to burn anyone a copy as soon as I get my CDs and burner organized and up-and-running (I recently moved, and everything is currently in disarray) as long as your willing to pay for the envelope and postage (I won't charge you more than it costs me, and I'll supply the blank CD-R free). When I am able to do the burning, I'll post a note here. PLEASE don't e-mail me asking you to burn you one until then (hopefully, it'll be soon) ONLY e-mail me if you're interested in the 45. Thanks, Chuck. e-mail: konggod1@yahoo.com |

| I had a full copy of the instrumental version transferred from the 45 to an mp3. You can get it at http:// users.rcn.com / rjparadis / music / Augusta_Dave_Loggins_instrumental.mp3 (It wouldn't let me paste in the url as is cause it complained the word is too long so I had to insert spaces which you'll need to remove.)
- It cost me quite a few bucks to get the 45 and then to get the mp3 made, but it was worth it. |

| He's got a chance, he's got a very, very good chance. Folks, that's what I said after Jack Nicklaus hit his 2nd shot onto the green on the 15th at the 1986 Masters. As you all know he made the Eagle putt and won his last major. What a day it was. Those were the days weren't they. That was all before I said, "women aren't better at golf because their boobes get in the way of their swing." |

| How can I buy this song? I am happy to pay for it. |
