Titleist 975D Driver

In my bag I have a Titleist 975D 8.5* Driver Extra Stiff Flex. This was always my favorite driver and I always called it the straightest club in my bag.

Other drivers I own:

Callaway Big Bertha War Bird 10 degree standard metal shaft. Got this as a present from a guy I worked for when I first took up the game around 1994 (he got tired of me borrowing his wife?s clubs every Friday - he also set me up with a set of weird Cobra irons - not the popular ones you are thinking of; more blade like)

Callaway Great Big Bertha 6.5 degree Strong flex. I paid full price for this at some golf shop in the San Fernando Valley when the Great Big Berthas first came out (around $425). They measured my swing speed and fit me with a Strong flex (107 mph). I still can't hit this club with any kind of consistency but when I do hit a fairway I lock in the long drive for the tournament!

Titleist 975D 8.5 degree extra stiff shaft. Once I started getting serious about golf, around the time Tiger started kicking ass, it seemed every player on tour had this driver so I bought one on ebay for about half of what the golf shops were selling them for. Before I quit golf, I could hit this driver straighter than my short irons (no wonder I can't break par).

Now that I have taken up golf again, I am having a tough time hitting the 975D. My father thinks it is because I don't swing fast enough for the X shaft and feels that a more flexible shaft would slow me down and get me back in the fairway. He lent me a Taylor Made driver out of his *collection* with a regular shaft:

Taylor Made 360 Ti 9.5 degree with a regular shaft. Wow, at first I loved it. After hitting a bunch of balls on the range with it the ball seemed to always be near my target - not near as far as the big swing it took for the 975d but who cares - the fairway is my priority. With this driver I could swing real easy and let the shaft do the work.

Wrong

It turns out you need to have a very good swing to consistently hit a shaft with too much flex. When I got out on the course it was a nightmare. The other day, when I was on the range, I went through every iron in my bag and hit about 10 real nice 5 irons before I decided to hit some drives. Picked up this regular shaft driver and with the same smooth 5 iron swing hooked everything. Bad hooks too, like snap hooks - not pulls, not duck hooks, but definitely not fairway style drives. After several balls I got my swing to the point where I could hit the driver nice - but then went back to my 5 iron and had big problems.

The answer??

Since I changed my grip I probably swing the club a lot slower and with less snap. So I think I need a shaft somewhere in between the extra stiff and the regular. I love my 975D and considered swapping out the shaft for a stiff. But then I checked out the sweet sweet goodness of ebay and found the exact same Titleist 975D 8.5* Driver I have with the same Titleist Ultralight 65 graphite shaft with a stiff shaft instead of the extra stiff. Buy it now cost = $74.99. That is probably cheaper than it would cost me to re-shaft my existing driver. This gives me two identical drivers to practice with and determine which shaft works best for me. The driver with the shaft I don't like will just go back on ebay for $75 - no brainer.

Once I figure out which shaft is for me and my current swing, I will pick up a matching 975d 3 wood with the same shaft.

PS ? I also noticed ebay had my $425 great big bertha 6.5* buy it now for $39.00 ? OUCH, these clubs depreciate even faster than my computer equipment!
